SCOPE Volunteers
The Scholars Committed to Opportunities in Psychological Education (SCOPE) Program relies on talented professionals and graduate students to serve as small group leaders and one-on-one mentors to SCOPE participants. If you are a psychologist or graduate student in the psychological sciences, we encourage you to apply to serve in one or both of these roles. They are described in greater detail below.
Breakout Group Leaders
SCOPE's one-day workshop includes large group presentations and small group discussions. The large group presentations are led by the SCOPE director and other coordinators and cover topics such as graduate program overviews and identifying programs of interest, crafting strong personal statements, creating a CV, graduate school finances, and more. After each topic, participants engage in small group discussions with a breakout group leader. As a breakout group leader, you will work with the same small group all day (~5-6 participants) and get a chance to know their background and educational and professional goals. You will engage the small groups in activities and discussion that are prepared for you in advance. Many breakout group leaders find that they are able to customize the discussion and activities for the unique needs and interests of their small group members.
Since SCOPE is committed to improving the recruitment and retention of students who identify with a historically excluded racial and/or ethnic group, we seek breakout group leaders who also identify with a marginalized racial and/or ethnic background. SCOPE participants have provided feedback that working with a breakout group leader who shares these identities with them is important. If you do not identify with a historically excluded racial and/or ethnic group, we invite you to participate as a one-on-one mentor.
Breakout group leaders will be compensated with a small stipend for their participation in SCOPE. In order to participate as a breakout group leader, you must be available on Saturday, June 1st, 2024 from 10:30am until 3:00pm.

One-on-One Mentors
In addition to the full-day SCOPE workshop, all participants are paired with a mentor to meet with one-on-one (typically virtually) to discuss career and educational goals. Mentors and SCOPE participants are paired based upon their research, clinical, and/or professional interests. This personalized mentorship model sets SCOPE apart from other similar programs and offers a unique opportunity for high-quality professional guidance. Mentors are only asked to meet with their mentee twice; however, many mentors and mentees continue to meet throughout the graduate school application cycle. We welcome mentors from all backgrounds and with a variety of educational and professional experiences within psychology.
If you are just serving as a mentor (not a breakout leader), you do not need to attend the SCOPE program on June 1st. You will be paired with your mentee within a few weeks following the workshop.
